Elephanta Caves Shiva Linga

The Elephanta Caves (घारापुरीची लेणी, Gharapurichya Lenee) consists of groups of caves with rock cut architecture built between 5th and 8th centuries, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place was originally called Gharapuri.

The caves are a delight, having sculptures depicting various scenes  including Trimurti – Panchmukhi Shiva, Shiva slaying Andhakasur, The marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati, Nataraja, Shiva-Parvati on Mount Kailash, and Ravana lifting Mount Kailash, Kartikeya (Murugan) and Ganesh.

 

 

 

 

How to Reach:

The Elephanta Caves are barely 7-8 kms from Mumbai, and can be reached by a ferry from the Gateway of India.
