The name Preah is a variation of the Sanskrit word Prasad – प्रासाद that also means sacred, and “Vihear” which is a variation of the Sanskrit word Vihara – विहार which means abode. The temple was also known as Sreysikharesvara (The power of the mountain).
Preah Vihear was one of the most sacred places for the Khmers. It was a seat of learning for more than 3 centuries.
The temple is situated atop a cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, in the Preah Vihear province, Cambodia, bordering the Sisaket province of eastern Thailand.
